Web design is a synthesis of many fields: visual design, typography, colors, photography, layout, interaction design, information architecture, (on-line) marketing, psychology, copywriting, technology (both front-end and back-end)… you name it.
Being a good Web designer (I mean really good) is a difficult task.
When you’re an intermediate/beginner Web designer, you need to know what to learn, where to start. However, once you get the overview, you need a deep insight and understanding. While beginners should read about Web design, the advanced guys must read about all the particular fields named above.
Don’t get me wrong, Smashing Magazine guys have done gorgeous job. I’m just afraid that many good Web designers read only about Web design.
